MARLON DARBEAU ON CORE 77

Marlon Darbeau's "Verb," made from teak and plywood, is an interesting piece of multi-functional furniture:

As an exploration of movement through space and time, 'Verb' allows its user to manipulate the shape of the object like a set or a prop - to choreograph space and in so doing change the way light inhabits and illuminates space. Read the whole post here and see the work.

Lovely designed alternative to the ordinary jewel case all the way from Trinidad and Tobago.
I designed the packaging for 12’s new album Streets & Avenues. The package is in itself an instrument that can be played by it’s holder. Creating something that moved, something you can play with, was both intuitive and intentional, it changes the expectations of an object like an album package. Read it all here and see the work.

Introducing Town

Planned to appear at irregular intervals (approximately every six to eight weeks), Town publishes poems, short prose, and art in broadside editions posted in public locations around Port of Spain, and online. It is edited by Alice Yard co-instigator Nicholas Laughlin together with writers Anu Lakhan and Vahni Capildeo. Read the full post here.

A CRITICAL SPACE from artzpubfilms on Vimeo.

Critical Space is a short video featuring a conversation between Alice Yard co-instigator Christopher Cozier and Draconian Switch publisher Richard Rawlins. It explores ideas about how to define the Caribbean and its creative possibilities, and examines the collaborative networks, off- and online, that are evolving around Alice Yard and its partners.

The genesis of the video was an invitation for Cozier to participate in the Transformations: New Directions in Black Art conference, organised by Lowery Stokes Sims and Leslie King-Hammond at the Maryland Institute College of Art (22 to 25 October, 2009). Unable to attend in person, Cozier proposed that the conference screen a video conversation instead, and enlisted the creative team behind Draconian Switch as collaborators. The video was shot and edited in the space of forty-eight hours.

Critical Space is an artzpub films production. Director: Darryn Boodan. Editor: Tracy J. Hutchings. Photography: Rodell Warner, Richard Rawlins, and Damian Libert. Equipment provided by: Dave Williams, firsttfloor studios.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES "The Frog" animation requires a crew...read on

Positions include:

Background Artist
Character Modeler
SFX Renderer
Motion Artist

If interested, please email ziaholder@gmail.com with CV and/or portfolio pieces. Call 735-0770 for further details in necessary.

Production will start immediately on an animated short, named "The Frog". It's an adaptation of a feature length script called "The Frog that Swallowed the Cosmos" and should pan out to about 7- 8 minutes in length Most of the animation will be done in After Effects. The deadline for completion is Nov. 28th, firmly. It needs to be submitted to the American University of Washington DC Library for vetting etc. This leaves about a month to wrap production.

This project is being produced with the support of AU and the film will be submitted to a couple film festivals in DC, and around the Caribbean. The pay will be paltry, however, tasks are pretty specialized and the work is fun and not that demanding. The most important thing is that the piece will become a part of the portfolio of everyone who has worked on it. They also get credit, and parts of any money it makes from prizes or if it is sold to any media houses etc.

The conceptual art work, the script, most of the storyboards and the animation style have already been worked out. So this is literally a project where we hit the ground running. As a director/ producer who seeks to nurture talent though, I'm always looking for input and feedback, so these things aren't set in concrete.

Looking for people versed in After Effects and Illustrator mainly. Although a detailed knowledge of Photoshop can substitute for the latter. (They will be background artists). Members of the team must have their own computers (software will be provided).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Kingstonlogic 2.0: GLOBAL VIDEO DEBUT
11 March 2009 - phree music / Rickards Bros.

Kingstonlogic 2.0 is the second video release from the album of the same title by Waterhouse, Kingston artist Terry Lynn, and the second video directed by the Rickards Bros. for the artist.

In creating the first experimental video for Kingstonlogic 1.0, producer ‘phred’ connected Lynn’s lyrics to a rapidly-changing series of Afflicted Yard photographs depicting various realities of life in modern Kingston. In version 2.0, the colourful frenzy of Kingston comes alive with the collaboration of Terry Lynn, phred and The Rickards Bros returning on the beat opus of French producer Olivier Giacomotto.

The first video combining the talents of The Rickards Bros. and Terry Lynn, "The System", took aim at the corruption and violence which plagues the island, set against the backdrop of a rural slaughterhouse. It won accolades on many 2008 best video roundups, including Spin Magazine and Pitchfork.tv.

The Kingstonlogic2.0 video was screened for the first time to an audience in the streets of Waterhouse, Kingston where the entire video was shot, resulting in the unique event being covered in depth on national TV broadcaster TVJ.

Refusing to dole out the payola ransom money that Jamaican media and radio so often demands, 1000 copies of Terry Lynn’s debut album Kingstonlogic 2.0 were instead manufactured and distributed for free across the country, and throughout impoverished neighborhoods. Each copy was emblazoned with an anti-payola message; "my music is about the people, for the people, it's about change. we will not pay media a ransom to play this for people, we are instead paying for phree copies for you".

“It's a strategy and movement that matches Terry's message and sound: honesty and change. Same goes for the debut in the streets from which it came. The new video is a culmination of a great deal of time and effort from everyone involved, including the community, to create something that looks and sounds unique in an uncompromising way. " -describes Russell ‘phred’ Hergert, Terry Lynn’s creative partner and head of phree music.

"To our creative team, Kingstonlogic 2.0 is much more than a music video- it is an unapologetic documentation of modern urban life in Jamaica as seen by the people who live here." - say director and editor team Peter Dean & Peter John Rickards of The Rickards Bros./Afflicted Yard

The single complete with fresh remixes is is available on phree music in the UK on March 23rd, 2009.
The Kingstonlogic 2.0 album has it’s highly anticipated UK debut April 6 2009, is available in Continental EU on phree music, and in North America on Last Gang Records.

When I started studying the environment that surrounded me, observing it, trying to relate to it, try to describe it , observe the culture, I felt in no way identify by it, I couldn't relate. At the time i was too absorbed in everything that bothered my space. ...lvla
